The Perfect Couple (Netflix 2024)

By: Rachel Brodeur

In a world where nothing is perfect, Netflix’s mystery drama The Perfect Couple hits a fascinating mix of entertainment and crime. Set in the atmosphere of the wealthy elite in Massachusetts’ Nantucket Island the day before a summer wedding, amidst the picturesque beach and beautiful people, someone ends up dead. The rest of this six episode limited series is about uncovering the mystery and everyone in the wedding party is a suspect in what may be foul play.

The Perfect Couple taps into people's desire to both marvel at and judge the old money and aspirational wealth of a mostly untouchable class of people in much the same way The Great Gatsby does.  Amelia Sacks, the would-be bride, played by Eve Hewson (Robin Hood, Bridge of Spies), an outsider to the social elite is a window through which the audience can experience the intended groom’s family, headed by prepossessing matriarch Greer Winbury, played flawlessly by Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies, The Undoing). The cast of characters provide a range of suspects that are arrogant, entitled, naïve, sexy, and scandalous.

Despite centering on a death, The Perfect Couple  manages to avoid a dark frightening or even depressing tone, but rather stays in the realm of suspense and general drama. A strength of the show is that the story is told in just six episodes; the action moves quickly, and audiences can enjoy the speculation as clues are revealed both in forward action and flashback. The only criticism of the Perfect Couple is that it stays in a land of shallow beauty, but for those searching for a fun mystery to solve and a little bit of beachside escapism, it is a few hours well spent.

Rachel’s Rating: 7/10  Set against the backdrop of a wedding, Netflix's The Perfect Couple offers an intriguing blend of crime and drama. The bride-to-be provides an outsider's view into a privileged world and the stunning Nicole Kidman brings star power to this engaging, if somewhat superficial, mystery.
