Agatha All Along (2024 Disney+)

By: Rachel Brodeur

Disney kicks off spooky season by brewing up delightfully creepy magic with the premiere of Agatha All Along. Set in the Marvel Universe Agatha All Along is the spinoff sequel to their Wandavision series and the world of the Scarlet Witch, however, audiences unfamiliar with those projects can still enjoy Agatha’s adventures as a standalone story without having to study up on Marvel lore.

Actress Kathryn Hahn (The Glass Onion, Wandavision) known more as a character actress with smaller roles in a variety of television and film, takes the lead as the tough and jaded Agatha Harkness. Her direct, slightly sarcastic, no-nonsense style makes her a protagonist that’s unpredictable and fun to watch. She’s joined by former Parks and Rec castmate Aubrey Plaza (White Lotus, Dirty Grandpa) and the two have immediate on screen chemistry. Their repartee reveals that there are levels and history to their encounters, and audiences will have to discover if those are based on camaraderie or animosity.

Agatha All Along is spooky and fun in the way that other witch tales like Hocus Pocus (1993) handle the dark arts with a degree of levity that nerfs their horror. While the show does not rank high on the scare meter, it does deliver in terms of well-paced episodic suspense and mystery. The writing is strong. Dialogue is intentional, natural, funny and layered. Agatha All Along is a worthy addition to the Disney+ roster, and Marvel fans have already taken to message boards looking for clues in how the series fits into the greater puzzle of Marvel cinematic universe.

Rachel’s Rating: 8/10

Disney’s Agatha All Along is a fun and light-hearted series that blends mystery and magic without being too scary. The chemistry between Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza adds a unique charm to this addition to the Scarlet Witch lore and greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.
