Emily in Paris, Season 4 - first half (Netflix)

By: Rachel Brodeur

The dream of Paris romance, fashion and food is alive and well on the screens of Netflix’s fourth season of Emily in Paris. The series features a young American woman, Emily, played by Lily Collins (The Mortal Instruments, and Love, Rosie) who delightfully tackles both romantic and workplace drama with a light spirit of optimism and ever-present morality and charm.

Emily in Paris is the height of escapism. The show will take the viewer all along the most beautiful parts of Paris. Every scene is colorful and picturesque. Every outfit that Emily and the entire cast wear is a look straight off the pages of a fashion magazine. In fact, several sites, such as Shop Your TV and Worn on TV facilitate ways for fans to buy clothes and accessories seen on the show. Be warned, they don’t come cheap, with for instance one pair of Emily's Carolina Herrara red leather ankle boots retailing for over $500, that is if they’re not already sold out.

Like most escapism, Emily in Paris works best when the viewer doesn’t think too hard about it. Questions about how Emily still has a job despite a constant string of blunders, close calls, and unauthorized grand gesture saves, won’t be answered. Audiences are probably happier if they don’t consider how much she has to earn at her job in order to afford her high-end wardrobe while never repeating a single piece. But, those unanswered questions aren’t criticisms. The fourth season doesn’t change the formula that works. The show is fun, the problems are melodramatic, but comforting in that audiences know that Emily and her cast of good-looking fashionable friends will be okay.

Rachel’s Rating: 6.5/10  Netflix’s Emily in Paris keeps the momentum of its previous seasons by delivering a visually-delightful, romantic show, full of drama, beautiful people, aspirational fashion and French charm.
